Gary Police Sergeant William Fazekas was investigating a traffic incident on February 7, when he was reportedly shot twice. On Wednesday, he was presented with dozens of thank-you and get-well cards from elementary school students from the Gary Community School Corporation.

Public schools in Lake County's urban core continue to see declining enrollment. Numbers from the October 1 enrollment count were released by the Indiana Department of Education Thursday.

A bill that would have kept the Gary Community School Corporation under state control does not appear to be moving forward. Indiana House Bill 1187 was pulled from the Ways and Means Committee's agenda Thursday by committee chairman and bill author Tim Brown (R-Crawfordsville).
