NORTHWEST INDIANA - The Chicago National Weather Service in Romeoville has issued a lakeshore flood advisory for Lake and Porter Counties across the shorelines of Northwest Indiana.

It's in effect from 3 p.m. Saturday until 9:00 a.m., Sunday, December 13th.

Minor lakeshore flooding is expected due to large waves of eight to 12 feet, high lake levels, and up to a one foot surge.

Meteorologist Matt Friedlein says it will feel colder after the system moves into the area.

"This is due to a pretty strong system that will move over Northwest Indiana, bring us a lot of rain tonight into the day Saturday and on the back side of this as this system starts to pull out, we're going to feel the northerly winds increase and fee the temperatures drop some too going into tomorrow night," Friedlein says.  "But as those winds increase they're going to push the waves toward the Indiana shore."

Large waves combined with high lake levels will lead to minor flooding of parking lots, parks, and paths, along the immediate lakeshore. This includes portions of the Whiting Lakefront Park.

Additionally, a one foot increase in the water levels is possible along river mouths, canals, and ports along Lake Michigan.

Residents on or near the shore should take appropriate action to protect property from rising water levels.  A Lakeshore Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds will generate flooding of low areas along the lakeshore.
