NORTHWEST INDIANA- The United Nations Worlds Day Against Trafficking in Persons is Thursday. This year's event is the first-ever held in Northwest Indiana, commemorating victims of trafficking worldwide.

Dr. Kalyani Gopal, President and Founder of the Safe Coalition for Human Rights and a licensed clinical psychologist, says trafficking is not something that exists only outside the country, it occurs in the United States as well, especially within the Midwest and especially within Northwest Indiana.

Gopal says in the month of August last year, she identified 15 victims of trafficking among her patients at her psychiatric clinic in Munster.  The United Nations Worlds Day against Trafficking in Persons  is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Indian American Cultural Center in Merrillville.
