The Crown Point City Council has finalized a slight water rate decrease. The state has repealed its utility receipts tax. Greg Guerrettaz with Financial Solutions Group says utility providers have to pass along those savings to customers.

"This is being done throughout the state of Indiana. We're flowing through the benefit to the ratepayer of the 1.4-percent tax rate that the ratepayers had paid over the last year and will no longer be charged, as we go forward," Guerrettaz told the city council Tuesday.

No objections to the rate decrease were raised during a required public hearing. Clerk-Treasurer Dave Benson expects the change to take effect in the September billing cycle.

But the city is expected to consider raising the wastewater rate in the near future, and city officials continue working on the creation of a new TIF district to help fund an expansion of the city's wastewater system. Council members also agreed Tuesday to purchase the property at 1410 East North Street for $300,000, to allow for the future expansion of the public works campus.
