Indiana State Police say a crackdown on commercial vehicles led to some concerning findings Wednesday. Troopers from the Lowell Post teamed up with the state police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division and the Newton County Sheriff's Office for an enforcement blitz focusing on U.S. 41 and State Road 55.

I-65 concrete restoration work is moving to the northbound lanes this weekend. Starting Saturday, the northbound entrance ramps will be closed from U.S. 30, 61st and Ridge Road. The ramp from U.S. 231 to northbound I-65 is also closed for a separate contract. INDOT asks drivers to use Broadway as a detour.

The Lake County Sheriff's Department is investigating, after someone apparently started a fire in the lobby of the county jail Monday. The sheriff's department says that just before noon, a man entered the lobby, doused the area with some type of accelerant, lit it and ran.

A longtime Merrillville town council member has died. Donald Spann passed away suddenly Friday at his home, according to a town press release. He was 71. Spann represented Ward 1 for more than a decade, but was not seeking reelection this year.

Funding has been allocated to connect Dyer to the Region's bike trail network. The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) has funded a spur connecting the Pennsy Greenway in Schererville to Central Park in Dyer, in the coming years.
