Some Region police agencies will get new leadership in January.

Andrew McIntyre will take over as Valparaiso police chief, when Jeff Balon assumes the office of Porter County sheriff. Mayor Matt Murphy announced the appointment in a statement Wednesday. McIntyre has been with the Valparaiso Police Department since 2009 and currently serves as its captain of investigations.

Meanwhile, the Merrillville Town Council on Tuesday agreed to make Assistant Police Chief Kosta Nuses the town's interim chief, effective January 1. Nuses will serve as interim chief for six months, and then the town will begin its usual search process.

Nuses thanked council members for the opportunity. "I appreciate you guys giving me a chance to show you what we can do, and I'm not going to let anybody down," Nuses said.

Current chief Wiley Luther Cuttino is stepping down and then officially retiring once he uses up his remaining leave in March.
