Valparaiso planning educational programs for Disability Awareness Month

Sports broadcaster Jason Benetti will speak in Valparaiso, as part of the city's recognition of Disability Awareness Month. The city says Benetti, who has cerebral palsy, will share a message on "not judging a book by its cover."

City Attorney Patrick Lyp serves on the Valparaiso Advisory Human Relations Council. "It'd be a really great opportunity to learn from this gentleman's life experience and how he was able to, in his words, overcome some challenges and be not only the voice of the White Sox but also do a lot of other sports reporting nationally," Lyp told the city council last week.

The free event will take place March 21 at 6:00 p.m. at Ivy Tech Valparaiso.

It's one of a number of educational programs the city has planned throughout the month of March. Lyp said it's the first time the city has organized an extensive list of events for Disability Awareness Month.

"I think this will be a wonderful opportunity for the community to learn from various speakers, to learn about various challenges that our fellow residents go through, and hopefully on March 31, the last day, folks will say it was a good endeavor by the city," Lyp added.
