Lawnmower crash disrupted traffic on I-94 Tuesday

A crash that closed westbound I-94 for hours Tuesday was caused by a lawnmower making a U-turn on the highway, according to Indiana State Police. Officers believe the driver of the tractor pulling the mower tried to turn around at a bridge near State Road 49, but drove into the path of a van traveling in the right lane.

Police say the driver of the tractor, Harold D. Johns, 68, of Winamac, was flown to South Bend Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the van wasn't hurt.

It was one of a number of crashes on that stretch of I-94 Tuesday. An overturned semi blocked most of the eastbound lanes Tuesday afternoon.
