The Portage Fire Department is getting lots of attention and positive feedback for a recent rescue, but no funding to upgrade the equipment that made it possible. Matthew R. Reum, 27, was trapped for several days in an overturned truck in a creek under I-94.

A four-vehicle crash on I-94 ended with a jackknifed semi and sent a state trooper to the hospital Monday. Indiana State Police say Master Trooper Jeff Council was called to eastbound I-94 in Portage around 1:30 p.m., after a vehicle crashed after driving through high water.

Pavement patching will bring more lane closures to I-94 near Michigan City. Starting Thursday, I-94 will be down to two lanes in each direction for four miles around U.S. 421.

Drivers using I-94 in LaPorte County should watch for changing traffic patterns. Starting Wednesday, the two left lanes and shoulders will be closed in both directions between U.S. 421 and U.S. 20. Traffic will be shifted to the right, with two 11-foot lanes in each direction.

A crash that closed westbound I-94 for hours Tuesday was caused by a lawnmower making a U-turn on the highway, according to Indiana State Police. Officers believe the driver of the tractor pulling the mower tried to turn around at a bridge near State Road 49, but drove into the path of a van traveling in the right lane.

On I-94, watch for lane closures in LaPorte County, starting Tuesday. The Indiana Department of Transportation says the right lane and shoulder will be closed in both directions in two places: just east of U.S. 421 and just west of the Indiana Welcome Center.

I-94 bridge painting work is scheduled to begin Wednesday in Porter County. The Indiana Department of Transportation says eastbound traffic will be shifted toward the median between U.S. 20 and State Road 49. Overnight lane closures will take place to set up the lane shifts.
