Guitar Great LARRY CORYELL Jazzes Things Up on Midwest BEAT

Originally broadcast on  WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2016

MUSICAL GUEST: Jazz Guitar Great LARRY CORYELL

One of the pioneers of jazz fusion LARRY CORYELL deserves a special place in the history books.   Coryell is comfortable in almost every style, and has played everything from decibel-heavy, distortion-laden electric guitar, to the most delicate and soothing music one will ever hear on acoustic guitar.

This masterful guitarist and composer — who has worked alongside such greats as Dizzy, Miles and Cobham and numerous others — joined show host Tom Lounges to discuss his long journey through music, as songs from his brand new album, “SanPaku” are spotlighted.

Coryell is revered by string benders worldwide for being the artist who brought a nearly alien sensibility to jazz electric guitar playing in the 1960s, a hybrid sound owing as much to blues and rock as to the earlier bop influences of his youth.

Coryell performed songs from throughout his career, as well as showcase some selections from his new “SanPaku,” when he took the stage with Paul Wertico and Larry Gray for an 8pm concert on November 17 at The Jazz Showcase in Chicago.

Tom Lounges has been a region radio personality and a music journalist since 1979. For the last 35-years, he has been reporting on entertainment as a weekly columnist and feature writer for The Times newspaper. He was also publisher and editor of the monthly tri-state entertainment magazine ("Midwest BEAT Magazine") for over two decades, he has written hundreds of features for numerous national glossy magazines over the decades, and he wrote "Liner Notes" for over a dozen albums release by Sony Records.
