Regionally Speaking, Tuesday, August 22, 2017

Larry Brechner

On Friday, August 25th, Indiana University Northwest will officially open its new $45 million Arts & Sciences Building. Experts agree that this building’s presence -- and the activity that its inhabitants will bring -- will make a long-term, positive impact for the City of Gary, northwest Indiana, and its residents.  We will bring you comments from some of those experts -- ranging from faculty members who will teach students from the new facility and supervise community activities like theatre performances, to economists and economic development officials looking for what the Arts & Sciences Building will mean to the Gary campus' and the community's future.

We also have a conversation with Tom Pappas, with the city of Portage veterans committee, on the next monthly meeting and about discussions underway into the potential expansion of the Adam Benjamin VA outpatient clinic in Crown Point.

And Indiana Public Broadcasting's Stephanie Weichmann  reports on an innovative way to bring relief to a "food desert" -- setting up a food box in a neighborhood library branch to make up for the lack of access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Chris Nolte produces and hosts “Regionally Speaking” aired weekdays from noon to 1:00 p.m. He's also the temporary local "Morning Edition" host.
