Regionally Speaking, Wednesday, November 8, 2017

Gary-Chicago Crusader

Today:  we revisit our conversation with Michigan City Area Schools Superintendent Barbara Eason-Watkins about the school district's growing high-tech education program that now includes Chromebooks for students.  The program recently picked up an Innovators Award from the Society of Innovators in Northwest Indiana.

Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez is in the studio today to talk about the Sheriff's Department under his leadership, about the issues at the Lake County Jail and the continuing war on narcotics and opioids in the Region -- how his department is working with other law enforcement to fight illegal drugs and their effect on residents.

Purdue University Northwest campuses in Hammond and Westville are hosting a week of events recognizing Veterans Day.  Westville campus Dean of Students John Weber is leading the team working on these events, and he joins us to talk about them.

And we talk with Michael Martinez, who along with his wife Mary founded "Hannah's Hope," a nonprofit organization dedicated to their daughter Hannah, who was born with a severe brain disorder caused by a prenatal stroke.  "Hannah's Hope"  just opened a playground in Portage that is the Midwest's first all-inclusive playground -- fully accessible to all children regardless of their ability.

Chris Nolte produces and hosts “Regionally Speaking” aired weekdays from noon to 1:00 p.m. He's also the temporary local "Morning Edition" host.
