GARY - Seeing the impact bullying has on so many kids, Gary Author Adra Young, wrote a book of realistic fiction called "The Misfits." Realistic fiction is a genre consisting of stories that could have actually occurred to people in a believable setting. The stories resemble real life, and fictional characters within these stories react similarly to real people.
Young says her latest book was released in March of 2017 and she has sold about one thousand copies of "The Misfits."
"The book is an anti-bully read based upon four youngsters who meet through fate, due to being antagonized by an older middle school student," Young says. "It started off as them entering middle school at sixth grade being tormented by a seventh grader and the setting picks back up with them the night before the first day of school as seventh graders in hopes that the same person won't continue to torment them. It only gets worse."
The author got the idea to write the book from working in her youth advocate role.
Young said in her work with children, she heard numerous reports of bullying taking place.
The reason she wrote the book is she wanted children and teens to learn how to appropriately advocate for themselves. She also wants everyone to understand that bullies, as she put it, don't just grow on trees. She says something happens to people in life and they turn into bullies.
