Regionally Speaking, Tuesday, July 9, 2019

Wikipedia

Today:   We talk to Father Mike Surufka, a-k-a Father Mike, the pastor of Holy Name of Jesus parish in Cedar Lake and, now the administrator for the Cathedral of Holy Angels and the Church of Sts. Monica and Luke, both in Gary neighborhoods that are affected by the city's overall blight problems.  Fr. Mike is organizing volunteers to come into the two parishes' neighborhoods on July 25th and 27th for separate clean-up operations on both days.  We also have another conversation from the Welcome Project at Valparaiso University, with another Gary resident who lived through the "white flight" years.

Kathy Luther with NIRPC talks about the remediation-related projects in Gary, Hammond and East Chicago (and, she hopes, other Region communities) that can be accomplished with a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Brownfields cleanup program.  And Amari Victoria and Elisabeth Menning talk about this weekend's inaugural "NWI Pride" LGBTQ-Plus event in Highland.

Chris Nolte produces and hosts “Regionally Speaking” aired weekdays from noon to 1:00 p.m. He's also the temporary local "Morning Edition" host.
