Fatal Shooting Involving Psychiatric Patient and Officer

MUNSTER - A sheriff says a psychiatric patient disarmed and fatally shot a retired police officer at a northwest Indiana hospital before another security guard shot and killed him. Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez tells The Times" that the patient — later identified by the coroner's office as 22-year-old Jamal Williams of Lansing, Illinois — beat a nurse at Community Hospital in Munster about 1 a.m. Tuesday. Two retired sheriff’s officers working hospital security responded and a struggle ensued. Williams managed to take a gun from the belt of 59-year-old Ryan Askew and fatally shot him. Martinez says the other officer returned fire, killing the patient.
