Region High Schools Approach to Athletics Vary Amid Coronavirus

NORTHWEST INDIANA - The Calumet High School football program is underway again along with a few other high schools around the Region after the programs were suspended due to COVID-19.

Calumet and River Forest had suspended prep sports activities on July 14th.  Michigan City stopped its sports activities July 16th, after the school was notified one of its athletes tested positive for COVID-19.

Calumet resumed team gatherings Monday.  Football coach Rick Good told the "Times" the team will remain in Phase 1 of the Indiana Department of Education's prep sports resumption plan and hope to move into Phase 2 — which allows contact sports to resume contact — next week.

River Forest does not have a definitive date for when it will move into Phase 2.

Michigan City athletic director Craig Shaman confirmed that his school has advanced to Phase 2.

At least 12 other region schools have currently halted team activities for at least one or more sports. They include: Chesterton, Clark, EC Central, Gavit, Hammond, Highland, Kankakee Valley, LaCrosse, Morton, Munster, Portage and Valparaiso.
