Hammond Mayor Tom McDermott Jr. says he will battle Mother Nature and will be at the Indiana Statehouse first thing Wednesday morning to file his ballot qualification signatures for U.S. Senate... before he returns to northwest Indiana.

He told "Howey Politics Indiana" that when he files on Wednesday, he'll have more than 500 signatures in each district, certified. If they were challenged, they are all registered and that his campaign will be able to withstand any challenge.

McDermott said he used some 50 people to gather the necessary 500 signatures in each of Indiana's nine congressional districts.

The City of Hammond is planning to replace two of its fire stations. The Times says the city is looking to move Fire Station 2 to the current location of a Lake County Solid Waste District building on Calumet Avenue.

Hammond Corporation Counsel Kevin Smith says the city hopes to break ground late this spring, with construction taking about 13 months. The new buildings are expected to have an open layout with a modernized kitchen -- and be large enough to easily fit modern fire trucks.

Hammond also plans to build a new Fire Station 7 starting in 2023. The Times says the city hasn't picked an exact location yet, but Mayor Tom McDermott Jr. is looking at a spot near Columbia Avenue and 175th Street.

The Indiana House has approved along largely party lines a Republican-backed proposal that would require voters who request mail-in ballots to swear under possible penalty of perjury that they won’t be able to vote in person at any time during the 28 days before Election Day. House members voted 66-28 on Monday in favor of the bill that supporters maintain is aimed at encouraging people to cast ballots in person during Indiana’s early voting period. Democrats and voting rights activists argue it would discourage people from selecting their most convenient way of voting. The proposal now goes to the Republican-dominated state Senate for consideration.

The average price for gas across Indiana today is $3.25 per gallon, says Gas Buddy. That is an increase of 12 cents from where it was this time last week. The cheapest gas in the state is in Kokomo where it's $2.80.
