The Gary Police chief is thankful that Monday's shooting of an officer didn't turn out worse. Chief Brian Evans says Sergeant William Fazekas saw a traffic incident, and before he could get out of his car, he was shot twice.

"This could've been a very tragic incident. I have buried four Gary Police officers in my 28 years on the police department. All died in the line of duty. Two were shot and killed, and two died in accidents on their way to calls," Evans told the city council's ways and means committee Tuesday.

Evans thanked residents for their support and for coming forward with what they saw. "With that being done and with people giving up videos from their Ring doorbells and businesses, we were able to determine that the suspect that we have in custody is the only one that was involved. And there is no danger to the public from anyone else, and there is no one else being sought at this time," Evans said.

He says Fazekas was doing well following surgery Tuesday afternoon, but he has a long recovery ahead.
