COVID-19 spread continues to trend downward in Northwest Indiana. Lake County is coded blue on this week's County Metrics Map from the Indiana Department of Health. That indicates a low community spread, based on the positivity rate and number of cases per capita. Porter, LaPorte, Newton and Jasper counties are all coded yellow, indicating a moderate spread.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's separate Community Levels map — which also incorporates hospital admissions and capacity — puts all of those counties in the green, the lowest level for that map.

Lake County currently is seeing its lowest seven-day positivity rate and lowest seven-day moving average of new cases since last July. Porter County currently has the region's highest positivity rate at 6.1 percent, the lowest it's been since October.

Statewide, more than 22,000 Hoosiers have died from COVID since the pandemic began.
