Gary students present get-well cards to wounded police officer as officials work to strengthen bonds between police and community

Gary Police Sergeant William Fazekas was investigating a traffic incident on February 7, when he was reportedly shot twice. On Wednesday, he was presented with dozens of thank-you and get-well cards from elementary school students from the Gary Community School Corporation.

Fazekas was visibly emotional when thanking the students for their well-wishes, and he stressed that Gary can't have a strong police department without a strong community that stands up to violence.

The card presentation was an opportunity for the city and school corporation to try to "break down the wall" between law enforcement and the community. Gary City Council President William Godwin said that starts with children. He encouraged the students who visited the police department Wednesday to introduce themselves to the officers.
