A Gary pastor is being recognized as a "Hoosier Resilience Hero" by Indiana University's Environmental Resilience Institute.
Curtis Whitaker started Faith Farms & Orchard in 2013 with the goal of revitalizing a blighted neighborhood, according to the institute. It's now grown to include raised beds, chickens, goats, a fruit orchard and five beehives, among other items.
The farm produces around 15,000 pounds of food a year, and a percentage is given away. Whitaker is one of nine "Hoosier Resilience Heroes" announced this year.
