An interactive map will help consultants develop plans for the extension of the Old Plank Road Trail into Northwest Indiana.

Potential trail users are weighing in on a potential extension of the Old Plank Road Trail into Northwest Indiana. It currently runs from Joliet to Chicago Heights, but a feasibility study is underway to extend it to Dyer and Schererville, where it would connect with the Pennsy Greenway.

Now, consultants working on the study have created an interactive online map, where residents can point out potential walking and biking destinations -- and challenging areas to walk or bike. People have already noted a number of challenges the future route would have to overcome — like busy railroad crossings and bodies of water. Meanwhile, Dyer's Central Park is identified as a major destination.

Residents have until the end of November to add their own comments and complete an online survey. Consultants plan to present a "preferred alignment and potential connectivity concepts" at a public meeting in the spring of 2023.
