Resident asks Crown Point Council to legalize backyard chickens

City of Crown Point

The Crown Point City Council is being asked to allow residents to own backyard chickens.

Currently, city ordinances prohibit chicken coops within 400 feet of a neighbor's house. But resident Sarah Freeland asked council members Monday to consider allowing residents to own hens, regardless of lot size.

"We ask that the city put in place the kinds of sensible ordinances already in place across the country, so our citizens can enjoy the benefits of healthy eggs for happy chickens," Freeland said.

She noted that ordinances can limit the number of hens, while prohibiting the louder roosters. Freeland also suggested that Crown Point model its regulations off an ordinance passed by the Valparaiso City Council in 2016.

Council members gave no indication on whether they'd pursue the matter, but Mayor Pete Land thanked Freeland for sharing her thoughts.
