Methodist Hospitals marking 100 years of serving Northwest Indiana

Provided

A local health care group is marking its centennial. Methodist Hospitals was founded in 1923.

President and CEO Matt Doyle says the hospital continues to play a major role in the city of Gary. "The city has near 70,000 citizens, and that is our community. Those citizens are our patients. Those citizens are our employees. Those citizens are the fabric of the organization," Dolye said.

Going forward, Doyle said Methodist Hospitals is working to address some needs in the community that can impact residents' health. Those efforts include a "nutrition station" to combat food insecurity, outpatient pharmacies, and the Sexual Trauma Awareness and Recovery Center.

"We're going to focus on getting outside of the four walls of the hospital and to really focus on the community needs within that. And that's what health care is certainly shifting to," Doyle explained.

He said Methodist is also exploring various partnerships, including working with IU Northwest to establish a residency program for new doctors. "This is extremely important for the region as a whole. We need to have the ability to educate and create our own physicians within the marketplace," Doyle added.

Methodist Hospitals is planning to host a centennial celebration on June 17 at the Hard Rock Casino in Gary, with proceeds going to the hospital group's Vision Fund.
