Regionally Speaking, Wednesday, September 20, 2017

Today:  Northwest Indiana community activist Ruth Needleman joins us in the studio to tell us about a new community rally next month outside the Gary-Chicago International Airport to protest the Trump administration's immigration policy and the local impact of plans to end DACA -- subjecting the "Dreamers" to potential deportation.

Ruth also talks about what she called a "secret visit" by U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to northwest Indiana and the recent decision by the Gary Common Council to dust off the long-dormant "Port Authority" ordinance and activate it for economic development purposes.

A delegation of U.S. steel company representatives and United Steelworkers Union members were in Washington, DC on Tuesday and Wednesday, lobbying with Senators and others on Capitol Hill to urge the Trump administration to sign off on a report that encourages stiff penalties against foreign steel companies who "dump" their products onto the world market at rock-bottom prices.  The end result is a serious economic impact on American steel and the companies and the people who make it -- including steel mill workers in northwest Indiana.  We talked with Marcelina Brown, an employee at the ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor mill near Chesterton who was a member of the local delegation.

Chris Nolte produces and hosts “Regionally Speaking” aired weekdays from noon to 1:00 p.m. He's also the temporary local "Morning Edition" host.
