Regionally Speaking, Tuesday, October 16, 2018

campaign page/Facebook

Today:    We continue our review of the Lake County Nov. 6th general election ballot with a look at Indiana Senate District 1, which includes the city of Hammond.  Incumbent state Senator Frank Mrvan Jr. wasn't able to be with us today (he was at a summer study committee meeting at the Statehouse,  so we'll talk separately with him soon) but his Republican Party challenger Charles Kallas came into the studio to discuss his campaign and the issues ahead to be considered by northwest Indiana and Hoosier lawmakers.

We also talk with Darrell Zeck, the new executive director of the state Department of WEorkforce Development's Office of Work-Based Learning and Apprenticeship.  He will be at two meetings in the Region on Wednesday, in Valparaiso and in Crown Point, to explain to businesses and school officials the programs and initiatives that Gov. Eric Holcomb and his administrators are doing to help bring more skilled labor into the Indiana workforce.  The Governor calls some programs "earning and learning."

And we have another conversation from the Welcome Project at Valparaiso University.  The Welcome Project collects first-person stories -- like today's from a steelworker in Gary -- and pairs these with intentional conversation to help forge stronger ties within and across our communities.

Chris Nolte produces and hosts “Regionally Speaking” aired weekdays from noon to 1:00 p.m. He's also the temporary local "Morning Edition" host.
