HAMMOND - A California man has been convicted after a one-day jury trial in Hammond District Court for possession with intent to distribute one kilogram or more of heroin.
United States Attorney Thomas Kirsch II said in a news release that the court proceeding involving 37-year Renato Salazar-Lopez, of San Ysidro, California, took place in U.S. District Court Judge Jon E. DeGuilio's courtroom .
According to evidence presented at trial, on September 28, 2018, on I-90 near the Portage Toll Plaza, a Hobart police officer made a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Salazar-Lopez. During a search of the vehicle, police recovered approximately 4.8 kilograms of heroin in the trunk.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration with the assistance of the Hobart Police Department.
Sentencing is scheduled to take place on February 16, 2021.
