Crash Closes I-94 for 12 Hours Tuesday

NWI Times

LAKE  STATION - A two semi crash that happened at around 2 in the morning on Tuesday caused a 12-hour closure on I-94.

It happened at the 14.8 mile-marker.  An Indiana State Trooper, who was responding to another crash, saw a 2016 Volvo truck and semi-trailer rear end a FedEx truck that was pulling two semi-trailers.

Preliminary investigation shows that the FedEx vehicle was slowing in the traffic backup when it was hit.  The impact resulted in a large amount of paint and diesel fuel to spill onto the roadway.  The driver of the Volvo was trapped inside of the cab and had to be extricated.  The driver was flown to a trauma hospital in Illinois.  The vehicles were towed from the scene.

All lanes of I-94 were closed at the crash scene for 12 hours for scene cleanup, which required removing the spilled paint from the roadway surface.  One lane of traffic was able to go around on the inside shoulder to avoid the affected portion of the roadway.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
