The Merrillville Police Department is reporting success with its license plate readers. Police Chief Wiley Luther Cuttino told the town council Tuesday that theft recoveries were up in the past couple years — and with the license plate readers, he expects that trend to continue.

"We have had that tool now for about three months, and it's been an excellent tool. And we look forward to installing them. Matter of fact, we have one already installed on one of our mobile vehicles, and that's showing to be a major asset, as well," he said.

Cuttino said most categories of crime are down in Merrillville, according to the most recent Uniform Crime Report from the FBI. But assaults are up slightly, following a nationwide trend.
