Gary and Valpo transit operators join South Shore Line in lifting mask mandates

GPTC

More public transportation providers are lifting their mask requirements, after a nationwide mandate was struck down in federal court. The Gary Public Transportation Corporation and Valpo Transit say they'll no longer require masks on buses.

The South Shore Line initially announced Monday evening it would continue to enforce its mask mandate but reversed course just a few hours later, after guidance was released by the Transportation Security Administration. The railroad says train crews will continue to provide masks free of charge for those who want to wear them.

Jessie Watts Jr., the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District Police chief, told the NICTD board last month that the South Shore Line hadn't had any major issues with compliance since the early days of the mask mandate.
