Dyer man dies in kayaking incident

provided by Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement

A man is dead and a woman is in critical condition, after a kayaking incident in Hobart Sunday evening. Indiana Conservation Officers say it happened around 8:15 at Robinson Lake.

Witnesses reported two kayakers tipped over and were struggling in the water about 200 feet from shore. Both went under the water, but a bystander was able to swim the 54-year-old woman to shore, with help from a Hobart Police officer. She was taken to St. Mary's Hospital, where she remains in critical condition. The body of the 19-year-old man was recovered almost an hour later. Investigators believe both kayakers had life jackets with them but weren't wearing them when the incident happened.

Both were Dyer residents, but their identities hadn't been released as of Monday afternoon.
