Wrong-way driver detection system installed at Calumet Ave. Toll Road exit

The Indiana Toll Road is looking to prevent wrong-way drivers in Hammond. The Toll Road says it installed a wrong-way driver detection and alert system last month on the eastbound exit ramp to Calumet.

The system uses thermal detectors and high-speed cameras. If it finds a driver going the wrong way, lights will begin flashing and Indiana State Police are notified, while the Toll Road's traffic management center monitors the live video. If the vehicle still doesn't turn around, messages are posted on the Toll Road's electronic signs, to alert other drivers.

The system has already been installed at the Rolling Prairie Travel Plaza and the Mishawaka exit. Toll Road officials say it found 97 wrong-way drivers during 2022. All but two of them turned around on their own.
