Longtime support staff at Valparaiso Community Schools could get be getting more vacation days. Currently, the most vacation days that year-round classified staff can get is 20. A change approved by the school board Thursday will increase that to 25, for those with at least 20 years of service.
Superintendent Dr. Jim McCall said it's meant to help with recruitment and retention efforts. "We have a lot of longtime, loyal classified staff, and this is a good way of not only rewarding them but also giving an incentive for those who are marching on their way toward it," McCall added.
The school board also agreed to offer stipends for maintenance staff and mechanics willing to be on-call for potential emergencies.
"Mechanics would be a weekend on-call program and would be in the amount of $60. The maintenance staff is a weeklong on-call and would be in the amount of $150," McCall explained.
He said until now, if an emergency happened, school officials would simply call around and hope someone was available.
