Regionally Speaking, Tuesday, October 30, 2018

Purdue University Extension Service

Today:    we focus on referenda questions, local and statewide, when we talk with Purdue University economist Larry DeBoer, who is a specialist in local and state government taxation issues.  He looks at why public school districts and local governments ask for voter approval to increase taxes outside the property tax caps. There are public questions on some Lake County ballots next Tuesday, aside from a statewide public question about balanced budgets.

We bring you another conversation from the Welcome Project at Valparaiso University.  The Welcome Project collects first-person stories (in today's instance, a bilingual one) and pairs these with intentional conversation to help forge stronger ties within and across our communities.  And Indana Public Broadcasting's Brandon Smith talks to another candidate for U.S. Senate -- this time, it's Republican Mike Braun.

Indiana Public Broadcasting reporter Charlotte Tuggle has an updated look at the problems communtiies face with blocked railroad crossings.  And, ahead of Halloween, we offer a holiday "Record Bin Roulette" and Sharon Jackson's conversation with a paranormal investigator about well-known hauntings in Gary.

Chris Nolte produces and hosts “Regionally Speaking” aired weekdays from noon to 1:00 p.m. He's also the temporary local "Morning Edition" host.
