City of Gary Reviewing Policing Policies

City of Gary

GARY - Gary Mayor Jerome Prince is working on the city's next steps in reviewing policing policies.

In a released statement the mayor says he is signing an executive order establishing a commission of civic and business leaders, community activists, faith leaders and community organizations to propose meaningful police reform.  As part of its work, the committee will investigate what, if any, policing responsibilities can and should be shared or shifted to other departments.

He says in the interest of public safety, he is open to considering new public safety models.

Prince also says that defunding any police department covers a wide spectrum of ideas. He says if something along that spectrum makes the most sense for Gary, he says he will consider it.
