Another dilapidated building in Gary is set to be torn down.
According to the mayor's office, the former Mahencia Apartments, also known as the Hatcher Apartments, were built in 1928 for steel mill executives and city leaders. But after several ownership changes, the building on West 5th Avenue has deteriorated and become what Mayor Jerome Prince calls an eyesore and a safety hazard.
Now, Prince officially plans to kick off demolition work Tuesday afternoon.
Prince is currently seeking a second term as mayor. He faces a Democratic primary challenge from State Senator Eddie Melton.
