Today:Lakeshore Public Media’s “Building Blocks” initiative is a multimedia project focused on early childhood development and the challenges faced by families in Northwest Indiana. It aims to promote high-quality early learning and provide vital resources for families with young children.

In this episode of "Building Blocks: The Podcast," host Dr. Mary Jane Eisenhauer talks with Rachel Lieske about the importance of early speech-language intervention and the role of play in child development. Rachel emphasizes acting early rather than taking a “wait and see” approach, shares personal stories from her 17 years of experience, and highlights how music and everyday activities can build language skills.

Additionally, the Calumet Township Trustee will present the Spring 2025 Safety Net Symposium, "Building Stronger Communities Together," on May 21, 2025, at Marquette Park Pavilion in Gary, Indiana. This event aims to improve collaboration and support services for vulnerable residents. Trustee Tai Adkins will provide more details.

We will also discuss the proposed Lake County Convention Center, currently being considered by the Lake County Board of Commissioners. There are two competing proposals: one in Gary near the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana and another in Hobart near Patriot Park. In 2023, state senator and Gary Mayor Eddie Melton introduced Senate Bill 434 to create the Lake County Convention and Economic Development Fund, which supports the convention center and local revitalization efforts.

Matt Schuffert, president of Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana, will join us to discuss how a convention center could contribute to economic development and tourism in Lake County. Stay tuned for this edition of "Regionally Speaking" .

Dee Dotson is the host and producer of our radio show/podcast, Regionally Speaking. Dee is responsible for connecting with the northwest Indiana community to share their stories with the Lakeshore Public Media listening audience.
