Regionally Speaking, May 1, 2018

Indiana University Bloomington

Today:   we talk to the president of Great Schools, Matthew Nelson, about the organization's first-of-a-kind list of more than 800 public and charter high schools across the country -- 45 of which are in Indiana and five in northwest Indiana -- that received "College Success Awards."  It's an award which recognizes schools that are doing the best at preparing students to get into and succeed in college.  The five local schools are: Chesterton Senior High School, Hanover Central High School in Cedar Lake, Munster High School. Valparaiso High School and Wheeler High School in Porter County.

We bring you another conversation from the Welcome Project at Valparaiso University.  The Welcome Project collects first-person stories and pairs them with intentional conversations to help forge stronger ties within and across our communities.  This conversation is again about a local resident's view of the changes that affected Gary, Indiana.

The Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso is celebrating its 125th anniversary and one of the Jubilee performances is a unique local history lesson, told in the form of a radio play and a puppet play.  Meg DeMakis with the Family Folklore Foundation is with us to talk about the event coming up on May 17th.

We bring back our conversation with Griffith Police Chief Greg Mance about a May 19th workshop in Gary for women and minorities who want a career in law enforcement -- particularly with local police departments.

And we bring you a conversation with the first of three Republican Party candidates for U.S. Senate on the May 8th primary election ballot.  Over the next three days, we will bring you all three candidates' views.  Today,  Indiana Public Broadcasting's Brandon Smith talks to southern Indiana businessman Mike Braun.

Chris Nolte produces and hosts “Regionally Speaking” aired weekdays from noon to 1:00 p.m. He's also the temporary local "Morning Edition" host.
