A proposed Portage subdivision is drawing concern from a plan commission member.
The city council has already approved the first part of an annexation request for a future 240-home subdivision on County Road 700 North, between Willowcreek and Swanson. But plan commission member Austin Bonta is urging council members not to follow through with the second part. He doesn't think the potential tax revenue is enough to offset the added expense.
"I have been here at this meeting listening to issues when it comes to mutual aid with the fire department, record numbers of trash being picked up, fees going up, and it seems to me that the city is in a financial situation, which really isn't much of a secret," Bonta told council members earlier this month.
And if the council does decide to let the subdivision move forward, Bonta wants it to be at a lower density than what the developer is requesting. "An R-4 neighborhood, to do it new would really be odd to me, but I think that, if anything, it's most appropriate at the city center, not at the most southern part of the city," he said.
Meanwhile, another developer is asking to rezone almost 17 acres on the north side of U.S. 6, across from the Aldi store, for future commercial development. Potential uses include a car wash, retail and other services.
The council could vote on both requests at its August meeting.
