Steven Skinner dedicates every day to his love of pottery and finding new ways to
shape each creation. He and his wife Louise invite you to spend the day
experiencing BlackTree Studio. Steven will demonstrate his unique handbuilding
process in the rural, peaceful atmosphere of his workspace and help Friends of
Indiana Artisan build a small piece of pottery of their own.

Enjoy a lovely summer drive through rural Indiana. The event is free as part of your Friends of Indiana Artisan membership. Pack a picnic to enjoy lunch with the group. The Skinners will provide some fresh-from-their-garden sides, and Indiana Artisan will serve bottled water, wine and dessert.

Steven has been a working artist all his life. Many experiences have influenced his hand-built pottery, including his training as a fine artist, his interest in printmaking, watercolor painting, and sculptural forms, especially the unearthed handmade artifacts and shards from ancient cultures and shapes found in nature.

“Working as spontaneously as I do,” says Steven, “my work is self-expressive with a style unique to who I am as an artist, a sculptor, a potter and a craftsperson.”

BlackTree Studio is truly a hidden gem in the farming community of New Carlisle, Indiana, where Steve and Louise moved to in 2006 from Chicago. On their 5 acres, they founded BlackTree Studio Pottery, built their studio, two kilns, and finally, their small gallery.

This special experience is open to all for $10 each, and free to Friends of Indiana Artisan. It’s a great way to learn more about Indiana Artisan and our Friends program. If you aren’t already a Friends member, and decide to become one, your admission will be credited to your $45 membership.
