A 16-year-old bicyclist was killed Monday evening, in a crash in Porter County.

"There really wasn't places to take people that were in crisis, so ultimately, it was a lot of bad — a lot of bad choices for us, either an arrest or kind of just getting out of there," Portage Police Chief Michael Candiano told the city council Tuesday. "So we're hopeful that with this training and some of the avenues that this is going to open, that we can really start getting some people some more help."

The death of a five-year-old Porter County boy is being investigated by the Porter County Sheriff's Office.

A motorcycle rider is dead, after a crash in Porter County on Saturday morning. The Porter County Sheriff's Office says it happened around 11:30 a.m. on Division Road.

A motorcyclist is dead after apparently being hit by a dump truck on State Road 8. The Porter County Sheriff's Office says it happened around 3:50 p.m. Monday west of Kouts.

Two people were hurt in a crash on U.S. 20 in Porter County Friday morning.

Five officers are on paid administrative leave, following last week's police-involved shooting in Valparaiso.

"I just want to say how grateful we all are that no one else was hurt in this unusual event," Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas said during Friday's board of works meeting.

Police will be out in the Valparaiso area this week to bring awareness to school bus stop arm violations. The Indiana Department of Education believes that 2,530 stop arm violations happen every day in the state. That's in spite of clear regulations and severe penalties.

Porter County is stepping up its outreach efforts for those who've lost a loved one to suicide.
